Chromebooks do not generally get viruses, but they can sometimes get notification spam. This occurs when the user visits a new website and it asks permission to send notifications.
Unless it is a trusted website, never click "allow". These notifications will not only slow the performance of your Chromebook, they are also very disruptive and can sometimes even display inappropriate images or ask for personal information.
A typical notification will show up in the lower right corner of your screen near the time and battery display.
In order to disable the notifications, click the settings button that appears on the notification:
The following notice will appear. Click "Turn off notifications". This will disable all notifications from this website unless turned back on.
The best way to protect yourself from these notifications is to block them entirely before they start.
To start, click the three dots in the top right of Chrome to open the drop down menu. When the drop down menu appears, click "Settings" all the way at the bottom.
On the left hand side of the Settings page, click "Privacy and Security".
Then click "Site settings".
Then click "Notifications".
At the top under "Default behavior" click "Don't allow sites to send notifications". This will prevent any new websites you visit from sending you notifications.
Below, there will be a list of sites categorized by "Not allowed to send notifications" or "Allowed to send notifications" where you can ensure there are no other websites you don’t recognize that might send notifications. Or you can approve certain notifications, such as Gmail, Google Meet, Zoom, or Google Calendar.
